14 - Mount Taranaki
🌿 About this place
Mount Taranaki is one of the most iconic mountains in New Zealand, known for its near-perfect symmetrical shape. In Māori tradition, Taranaki is a powerful ancestor, and its story is one of movement and emotion.
According to legend, Taranaki once stood among other mountains in the central North Island but left after a great battle, carving out the Whanganui River as it journeyed west to the coast, where it now stands alone. The mountain is considered tapu (sacred), and the surrounding land holds deep cultural significance.
From above, Mount Taranaki appears almost perfectly circular. This is because Egmont National Park forms a protected boundary around the mountain, creating a clear contrast between native forest and the surrounding farmland. It is one of the most visually unique landscapes in New Zealand.
