If you only have time for one walk while visiting Mount Cook, make it this one.

What Makes It Special?
Unlike many famous mountain hikes around the world, you don't need to be an experienced hiker to enjoy the scenery. The track is mostly flat and well maintained, making it accessible for almost everyone while still delivering world-class alpine views.
Local Tip 💡
Start before 8:00 am during summer.
The car park often fills up before mid-morning, and the trail becomes much busier after 10 am.
Early morning also offers calmer weather, softer light for photography and a much quieter experience.
Best Photo Spots 📸
• First suspension bridge
• Mueller Lake Lookout
• Final viewpoint overlooking Hooker Lake
• The reflection of Aoraki on calm mornings
Before You Go
• Wear layers, even during summer.
• Weather changes quickly.
• Bring sunscreen, sunglasses and water.
• There are toilets at the start of the track and near the end.
• Drones are prohibited without a DOC permit.
• Stay on the marked track to protect this fragile alpine environment.
Short Time Alternative
If you don't have enough time for the full walk, head to Mueller Lake Lookout. It's only a short walk from the same car park and still offers fantastic glacier views.
NZTP Tip ⭐
Don't leave Mount Cook immediately after finishing the hike.
Drive just 5 minutes to Peter's Lookout before sunset. It's one of the best panoramic viewpoints in the entire South Island, yet many visitors skip it.
