29 - Milford Sound (Piopiotahi)
🌿 About this place
Piopiotahi, known as Milford Sound, is one of the most breathtaking natural landscapes in New Zealand. Despite the name, it is actually a fiord, carved by glaciers over thousands of years.
In Māori tradition, Piopiotahi is named after the piopio bird, said to have flown here in mourning after the death of the hero Māui. The area is part of Fiordland National Park, one of the most remote and untouched regions in the country.
Towering cliffs rise straight out of dark water, with waterfalls flowing from above, especially after rain. It’s a place where nature feels immense and overwhelming.
