31 - Stewart Island (Rakiura)
🌿 About this place
Rakiura, meaning “glowing skies” in Māori, refers to the island’s incredible sunsets and frequent aurora australis (southern lights). Stewart Island is the third largest island of New Zealand and one of the most remote and untouched places in the country.
Over 85% of the island is protected as national park, with dense native forest, rugged coastline and rich wildlife. It’s a place where nature dominates, and life moves at a much slower pace.
