11 - Tongariro National Park
🌿 About this place
Tongariro is one of the most sacred landscapes in Aotearoa and holds deep cultural significance for Māori. The land was gifted to the people of New Zealand by the chief Te Heuheu Tukino IV to ensure the protection of its tapu (sacred) mountains.
The park is home to three active volcanic peaks: Tongariro, Ngauruhoe and Ruapehu. These maunga are central to Māori identity and storytelling, representing ancestors and spiritual connection to the land. Tongariro National Park is also a UNESCO World Heritage site for both its natural and cultural importance.
