12 - Napier / Hawke’s Bay (Ahuriri / Te Matau-a-Māui)

🌿 About this place

Ahuriri, known today as Napier, sits in the Hawke’s Bay region, one of the sunniest areas in New Zealand. The name Te Matau-a-Māui refers to the shape of the coastline, said in Māori legend to be Māui’s fish hook when he pulled up the North Island.

After a major earthquake in 1931, Napier was rebuilt in Art Deco style, giving it a unique architectural identity. Today, the region blends Māori heritage, history and a strong wine culture.
