18 - Kaikōura
🌿 About this place
Kaikōura means “to eat crayfish” in Māori, reflecting the area’s deep connection to the ocean and its rich marine life. This small coastal town is one of the most unique places in New Zealand, where mountains meet the sea in a dramatic way.
Just offshore lies the Kaikōura Canyon, a deep underwater trench very close to the coast. This brings nutrient-rich cold water to the surface, attracting marine life year-round, including whales, dolphins and seals.

Tours depart directly from Kaikōura town, usually by boat (around 2–3 hours) or scenic flight. The most commonly seen species is the sperm whale, which lives in the area year-round.🌊 Why whales come here
