21 - Lake Tēkapo (Takapō)

🌿 About this place

Takapō, known as Lake Tekapo, is one of the most visually striking places in New Zealand. Its bright turquoise colour comes from finely ground rock particles carried by glacial water from the Southern Alps.

The lake sits within the Aoraki Mackenzie Dark Sky Reserve, one of the best places in the world for stargazing. For Māori, the area was part of important travel routes through the South Island, connected to seasonal food gathering and navigation across the land.
