22 - Lake Pukaki
🌿 About this place
Pūkaki is one of the most breathtaking lakes in New Zealand, famous for its intense glacier-fed blue colour. Like nearby Tekapo, its colour comes from finely ground rock carried by meltwater from the Southern Alps.
What makes Pukaki truly special is its direct alignment with Aoraki / Mount Cook, New Zealand’s highest peak. On a clear day, the view of the mountain rising at the end of the lake creates one of the most iconic landscapes in the country.
For Māori, the lake is part of ancient travel routes across the South Island, connected to food gathering and seasonal journeys through the land.
